AMEA expands the SESAR ESMA project. In two complementary demonstrations, it extends multilink capabilities across aircraft avionics and ground ATM networks, and implements the next-generation ATN/IPS network with a focus on security. Airlines get reliable, efficient communication; ANSPs gain capacity; aviation lowers its carbon footprint.
More airspace users experience multilink in daily operations, with Iris SATCOM and VDL2 working as one across several service providers.
Extended performance and features, including end-to-end security, validated lab-to-lab around Boeing's aircraft systems laboratory in Seattle.
ATS B2 wide deployment enables capacity increases, more reliable communication and a lower carbon footprint.

AMEA, ATN Multilink Expansion in European Airspace, is a SESAR Digital Sky Demonstrator running from October 2025 to September 2029. It demonstrates that several air-ground datalink communication links can work together in daily flight operations across Europe, so that a message between pilots and controllers always finds its way.
AMEA is co-funded by the European Union under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF Transport, grant agreement No 101233037), managed by CINEA, and supported by the SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking. The EU contribution is EUR 26.9 million.
A consortium of 16 partners across 9 countries, coordinated by Collins Aerospace: aircraft manufacturers, avionics suppliers, communication service providers, airlines, air navigation service providers and EUROCONTROL. Obizco leads communication, dissemination and exploitation.
Two complementary demonstrations. Multilink ATN/OSI combines Iris SATCOM and VDL Mode 2 across several communication service providers to measure resilience and performance with high volumes of data exchange: aircraft from partner airlines fly ATS B1 and B2 services in normal commercial operations from early 2027, once EASA has approved the new ground infrastructure, to September 2029. In September 2026, 47 aircraft were equipped for Iris and more than 200 are targeted. The next-generation ATN/IPS network is implemented with security as the first requirement and validated lab-to-lab from 2028, around Boeing's aircraft systems laboratory in Seattle.
AMEA is the direct operational extension of ESMA, the SESAR demonstrator that validated initial Iris SATCOM and IPS capabilities for SESAR Solution #109, air traffic services datalink using SatCom Class B. Where ESMA proved the technology, AMEA moves to large-scale demonstration.
